My Consultations
This part of my coaching is designed to help elite amateurs and tour professionals (not exclusively though) move closer to their true potential. If you find yourself (and / or your coach) constantly experimenting with different things that never stick, it's time to seek my expertise.
As indicated on my website, I possess a comprehensive understanding of the undeniable role that biomechanics plays in golf. I recognize that each golfer has unique optimal grip positions for both hands and utilizes the ground differently during their swing. These factors, especially the grip, also play a big role in the short game, especially in putting.
While this knowledge is important for all golfers, it becomes even more crucial for those at the elite or lower handicap level. Why? There are several key reasons, including compensations, accuracy, injuries, speed, and repeatability. Allow me to explain how these elements are interconnected.
Its all about the compensations & restrictions and how to get rid of them
It is a fundamental biomechanical principle that an improper grip position, one that does not match or enhance the player's natural arm and hip mechanics, will force him / her to make compensations. These compensations often manifest in alterations to the swing plane or leg action. Such adjustments are made to avoid shots to the left or right, depending on which hand is mismatched. Consequently, accuracy is the first casualty in this scenario.
If left uncorrected for an extended period, these compensations can lead to either a loss of speed and / or injuries. The likelihood of injury is directly proportional to the extent of the mismatch. In addition to grip issues, there are several other mismatches that trigger compensations you may not even be aware of. My cosultations can addresses these biomechanical imbalances.
By identifying and correcting these issues, we can improve accuracy, reduce the risk of injury, increase swing speed, and establish a more consistent and repeatable performance. Sadly, even the most skilled and perfectly matched golfer can fall victim to big speed losses and serious injuries simply by attempting to do something they should not or cannot do. One example is the misguided pursuit of "staying in posture" before, during, and after impact, as also the famous “changing shot shapes” that has been the ruin of many a top talent, including a former world number 1 ranked player.
Three more number 1 players’ careers were all but ruined due to the coaches being unaware of the biomechanics surrounding each individual’s grip, arm mechanics and lengths, as well as the role that a dominant leg plays.
Regrettably, these incidents are occurring every day where these fundamental principles of biomechanics are not applied. Since once again, this information is so recent though researched for so long, we can not blame the coaches before, but soon we should have no excuses for messing up an elite player’s career!
These compensations or attempts to perform actions outside of one's capability invariably lead to a loss of speed, whether it be clubhead speed or body speed, or both. In the contemporary game, distance has emerged as a crucial statistic, and any decline in speed only hampers players further. My mentors Mike Adams and Terry Rowles have tested many of the top 100 players and have always been able to attribute an uneducated swing change leading to less speed, to the player quickly falling out of the top 100.
Furthermore, as one would expect, compensations, no matter how small, deprive players of repeatability or consistency - an essential factor for those competing week after week. Being fortunate enough to be able to apply this modern approach, I have repeatedly witnessed the remarkable outcomes of removing even the slightest compensations. This initiates a process of "reversal," where the elimination of compensations results in heightened accuracy, increased speed, reduced risk of injuries, improved repeatability, and ultimately, enhanced performances.
Enough about the compensations - how do we get rid of them?
I know how to test a player for all of these factors, and the icing on the cake is that, with the help of our friends from FlightScope across the road, I am now able to use the first Swing Catalyst 3D Motion Plate available in SA, which allows me to see exactly how any player is using the ground to create the force pattern unique to them, something so vital and overlooked in coaching thus far, because it simply cannot be seen or measured with any other form of technology.
The improvements that can be seen simply by adjusting a player’s foot orientation, width, and flare in relation to their arm measurements, grip, and dominant force patterns, are simply amazing. The key is that this can only be done by a person with much knowledge and experience of biomechanics and force plate technology.
Applies right through your game - let’s do this!
As mentioned elsewhere, don’t think that this does not apply in the short game. Other than injuries and speed, the same patterns involving compensations, accuracy (especially in putting), and repeatability, are remarkably similar.
I do not think I have to do much more convincing - if you don’t know why you cannot get more speed and power, don’t feel comfortable in certain swing positions, or nothing feels repeatable enough to perform well, or even worse, you can sense an injury developing, contact me immediately so that we can start with a conversation and get you back to the way you deserve to be playing!
